Lynfrae Scottish Country Dancing Club

Welcome
Welcome to the Lynfrae Scottish Country Dancing Club website, where you can learn all about Scottish Country Dancing (SCD), the club itself and how to go about joining us.

Introduction
The Club was formed in 2004 by Campbell Tyler, who saw a need for a club that catered for Cape Town people new to SCD, whilst still providing for those with experience. This continues to be the ethos of the club, always welcoming those looking to try out SCD and find out what makes it such a fun experience for those dancing.

The club opened in the Congregational Church Hall in Franklin Road, Lynfrae (hence the name) but by the following year needed larger premises and moved to St Pauls Church Hall at the Rondebosch Fountain. After two years there the club again has had to move due to expansion and now meets at the church hall of St Johns Wynberg, in Church Street, just off Waterloo Green. The use of church halls has less to do with any spiritual affinity of the members than the need for a wooden floor conducive to dancing without foot damage!

Scottish Tour and Pallinsburn Ball 2008
This year the club is venturing to Scotland, with 20 of us taking a dancing tour through various villages and towns. It is all ending with a wonderful grand Ball at a country estate called Pallinsburn, right on the English border. Click here for the Ball Programme. Descriptions of the dances that will be danced are also available. If more detail on any of the dances is required, please email campbell@tyler.co.za

Wednesday dancing classes
Of course newcomers are also welcome at each of our club meetings, held at St Johns every Wednesday evening from April 2nd onwards. The evening starts at 7.45 with a simple warm-up routine, after which dancing starts. Dances vary from the immediately accessible to ones that require several years experience, but each person at whatever level of skill can walk away from a Wednesday evening having had good physical and mental exercise and enjoyment shared with a fun group of people. The evening ends between 9.30 and 10.00, depending on your enthusiasm and fitness.

Cost
Your first visit is free and thereafter you can choose an annual membership (R500 at the outset of the season, reducing depending on date of entry), monthly payments of R80, or R20 an individual evening. There is no special dress code, although most dancers find a need to buy SCD shoes after a while.

2007 sees the introduction of special classes on a Monday evening, when dancers are able to concentrate on improving certain aspects of their technique. Therefore you are able to take your dancing to whatever level you wish over a period of time. You may want to become the leading dancer in the group; you may just wish to muddle along enjoying yourself. The choice is yours, there is no pressure.

In 2007 we introduced a grading scheme - click here for more information.

Social Events
Various events during the year, hosted by our own club and the others in the Cape area, offer special occasions to dress up, optionally in Scottish dress, and have a party. A weekend trip to the club in McGregor, is always popular. The Tartan Ball, held at Kelvin Grove in November and hosted by all the Cape clubs, is the highlight of the calendar.

SCD is a pastime for young and old. Our current membership straddles the 15 to 65 year age groups. Men and women of whatever persuasion and background are equally welcome. You certainly don't have to be of Scottish extraction. SCD is practised throughout the world, Japan and Germany being countries where it is particularly popular.

So, feel welcome to join us. If you want more information about the club, please email us at campbell@tyler.co.za .
